Delight yourself also in the Lord; and he shall give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart. (Amplied)
When I read Psalm 37:4, I have a picture in my mind of someone laughing and dancing. Delight yourself in the Lord. Delight means giving great joy or pleasure. God promises us that if we take delight in Him, in serving Him, trusting Him, communicating with Him and knowing Him, that He will give us what we desire even the things we desire secretly.
What is a desire? A desire is strong want, a wish, or a craving. Everyone wants to have what they want. There may be people you know that puts the wants of others ahead of their own. Parents often sacrifice what they want for their children; giving up what they want so the children can have what they want. Or your best friend may give you the last piece of chocolate because he or she is your friend. Sometimes we want something but are afraid to ask for it or afraid of asking for too much. No matter if people have what they want, dont have what they want or give up what they want, they still want what they want! What do you desire? What is it in your life that you want for yourself or for someone you love? Whatever it may be, God can and will give it to you if you delight in Him. The truth is that as you delight in the Lord, His desires become your desires.
If you arent or havent delighted in the Lord, then that scripture may not sound so great to you. It may sound like too much work or it may seem like drudgery to you. But as you get closer to God and seek Him, you will find that there is delight in having a close relationship with Him. God wants us to have a close relationship with Him. He wants us to love Him like He loves us. He is actually telling us that as we give Him what He wants, He will give us want we want.
